Friday the 13th Masquerade at Benny's
Huntington Beach, CA

October 13, 2000

Friday October 13th. Full Moon. Costumes, candy, and beer. And a good dose of Heavy Metal! That's what the patrons of Benny's (not Denny's, but pretty close) experienced on a haunting evening in the most wicked month of the year. The show was put on by Neal Shelton of Black Triangle, but Raven Mad supplied decorations, fog, pumpkins, balloons, and trick or treats for the little ones (it was an all-ages show).

And what's a party without costumes! Here Mel models a very black metal/Dimmu Borgir kind of look (to think some bands dress like that *every* show!) while Dustin is aptly dressed as Jason from Friday the 13th. Smoke rises and plastic jack-o-lanterns glow.

Mel had an interesting challenge that night. She had agreed to play a show with Wrathchild, her Iron Maiden tribute band, before the Benny's show was booked. So, she decided to do two shows in one night! After Raven Mad's early set, she ran into the bathroom, washed off all the make-up, jumped into her Wrathchild stage attire, and scurried up the street for a later show. She was very disappointed that she wasn't able to stay and hang out at the Masquerade.

*Coff coff coff* Someone let the Moshking control the fog machine again! darn it! Actually, Denis the Moshking was far more moderate with the smoke effects at this show than he had been at our show at TC's. Instead, the fog machine took on a life of its own and started spitting smoke out uncontrollably. Mel finally unplugged it, but not before it completely obscured both band and audience in a near impenetrable haze.

It's Rasta Boy!! Somehow or another, William managed to tuck his huge headful of hair under that stripey, dreadlocked cap (his shirt reads "Jesus is Coming; Hide your Bong"). But, as the set went on, the cap came off, and the Fro Boy we know and love appeared, headful of hair more huge than ever! Check out the latest chapter of Fro Watch 2000 to see Fro Boy sans rasta hat.

Joe was actually trying to get in on the Fro Watch action. Unfortunately, no pictures were snapped of "Fro Joe"; Joe was wearing a HUUUGGGEEE afro wig. His fro was almost -- but not quite -- as big as William's. As a drummer, of course, Joe couldn't keep the wig on during the entire set, as his head was dripping sweat halfway through.
