Iron Maiden Show - Backstage
September 13, 2000

As Iron Maiden is one of my favorite bands of all time, I could not pass up Denis The Moshking's offer to see them again a few days later at the Universal Amphitheatre. Denis was crafty enough to score us pit seats -- that is, access to the area just in front of the stage.

As if that didn't get me up close n personal enough, a friend of mine in Texas, Bruce Corbitt, pulled some strings and got me a VIP pass backstage -- thanks, Bruce!! You RULE!! :) Needless to say, the whole prospect of going back stage and potentially meeting one of my ultimate bass gods (the other of my bass gods being the departed Cliff Burton, whom I will never meet) was too good to be true. Alas, I didn't get to meet Steve Harris, but I did hang out back stage and meet a couple other members of Maiden!

NO THAT IS NOT DAVE MURRAY!! But he sure looks like him, doesn't he? I believe his name is John. They were this wonderful English couple out on a Maiden holiday -- that is, they followed Iron Maiden around the Western United States. They found my Iron Maiden tribute band Wrathchild's website before embarking upon their holiday, and ended up catching us live at the Shack a few nights earlier. Then they were at the Universal Amphitheatre show the following night, then down to San Diego, and finally up to LA for the Universal Amphitheatre show, where I caught up with them back stage.

We spent some time hanging out at the backstage party, drinking free brewksi and eating chips, but had no idea where to find the band. Finally John's friend Tom pointed out that the band was OUTSIDE. By the time we go there, we had missed most of the members appearances, and Nicko McBrain was just leaving. But we caught Bruce Dickinson and Adrian Smith, at least.

Denis's friend Patricia "Metal Goddess" Kellogg asked me to give a letter and photos to Bruce, which I did. Unfortunately, I could not get him to look up at the camera while we were taking pictures, he was so rapt in whatever Pat had sent him. Oh well. Here I am pretending like we're taking a picture together.

At least in this picture, I could lie and say he was signing an autograph...

This was a nice fellow named Andres from Guatamala, who manned the camera for me backstage. In return, I took his picture with Bruce. At least Bruce looked up at the camera for this shot!

Adrian was much more photogenic, and agreed to take this picture with me as he rushed in and out of the meet n greet area.

It was a shame it was sooooo rushed, that all I had the chance to do was get a few pictures taken before they were whisked away again. And I didn't get to meet Steve Harris -- darn it! So, I went back into the show and had my camera ready for some live shots on stage!

Proceed onto the Show...
